Is there a guide book to leading a Viking Raiding Party?

I have a new hobby for the upcoming new year. As of 2006 I will start collecting etiquette/style guide books for men. I hope to build a library of them and in doing so have some of their knowledge transfer to this little Metrogeek.

And I'm not limiting myself to the standards, all etiquette books for all kinds of men are acceptable. The Hipster Handbook would be fair game, as would any book that features Stacey and Clinton. If there was a book on Online Gaming Etiquette I'd take that to. You get the idea.

I just have to make sure I'll have enough shelf space for all of them. Does anyone want a collection of the first 50 issues of Nintendo Power?

Help from the readers (all 5 of you)

I'm looking for some nice graphic art prints to hang on my bedroom wall. Anyone have any leads? Stuff like this but I'm open to anything. Thanks!

They might just work as kitchen cabinets as well

Interesting bookshelves from this German(?) website. Freestanding block letters with shelving in the back. I imagine you would use them as a room divder or even a nifty bar (using the letters BAR no less).

Oh, speak of the devil.

Brought to you by the good people at Boing Boing.

Kankuro in the Hat

So the search for a Kankuro hat continues. After exhausting many leads, I'm thinking of making one myself.

First things first: I'll need a Hidden Sand Headband if only for the metal plate. That would probably be the easiest component to pick up.

Next I'll need to put together a simple black felt winter hat. Ms. Stewart has a good set of instructions for that. I'll have to figure out how to make the "cat ears" but that shouldn't require too much modification to the original design. I don't plan on making the back drape down to my shoulders, instead keeping it up to about the regular length for a winter toque.

Then it's just a matter of putting it together ... which may be the biggest problem since I haven't touched a sewing machine since grade school. Perhaps it would be wise to find someone else to do all the needle and thread business, like this gal.

My justification for all of this is that I really do need a new winter hat. Might as well make one to match the geek within.

Camera Phones are so steeped.

Techno-lust has taken over me again. After only having my current phone for a year I'm itching to get a new one; Specifically the Sony Ericsson K750. The sexy design and 2 Megapixel digital camera are drawing me to it. The $400 US price tag is keeping me away.

Kicking me away ... with extreme prejudice ... Itai!

I guess I can wait till next year. Heck my current phone went way down in price, this one is sure to do the same.

This brings back memories of Team Fortress Classic

Slashdot links to the Hack a Day website (a great read by the way) which links to an article on how to build the Quintessential Sentry Gun. Kudos to him for taking on a fairly ambitious project. I'm sure creating the aiming program for the thing wasn't a cake walk.

My favourite part of the piece is the paragraph where the author tries to justify the construction of this gadget.

There are a number of applications for a sentry gun like this that don't involve putting holes in people. For example, I could put a camera on top and use it for wildlife photography. A squirt gun could be attached, and it could be used to discipline your cat when it tries to jump on the couch...simultaneously watering your couch. It lends itself nicely to a vortex gun platform, and that could be used to keep crows off of cornfields. . .

Come on ... we all know you built it because its freakin' sweet! No justification needed there man.

You won't need an ultraviolet light for this search

Next time you're in a hotel room, check behind the headboard, mirrors and wall art. You just might find yourself staring at someone else's Secret Wall Tattoos.

here’s the deal… you rent a hotel room, remove a mirror or piece of art, create your own art piece on the wall underneath, and then put the item back on the wall. and the flip side is it’s creating an army of people peaking behind stuff on the walls of their hotel rooms

That's steeped!

I would have called the product Ninjawire!

Off of that Directory of Wonderful Things, an American company by the name of DeCorp has developed some interesting flat wire products.

Thinking about setting up that surround sound stereo or a wire new home network? No longer will you have to worry about gutting your room to run wire behind the sheetrock. Now all you'll have to do is tape the flatwire to your walls, spackle over the flatwire, and paint over it to cover it up. Brilliant!

This would look great in the livingroom

I regret not buying this poster when I saw it at the convention.

amelie_jap.jpg

Such a beautiful design, but how would I ever carry the thing in that sea of cosplay humanity? Not even the best poster in the world looks good when it's all wrinkled and bent.

The Bender Case Mod

If the idea of a "Pimp my Case" television show excites you, check out the story behind this Case Mod here. At work my version of this mod is having a Bender Wind-up standing ontop of my PC. I am so hardcore.

Mourning Girl

I do love this shirt from Threadless.com. Very Battle Royale-esque don't you think?

mgirl.jpg

And no it is not because of all the pictures of cute girls with guns wearing the shirt. Sheesh ... I reserve that sort of fanboy-dom for cute guitar playing pop stars thankyouverymuch.

So many f-words for online shopping

Function dictates the need for a larger bag. Something I can carry my lunch in on top of the books and other knick knacks I'll need during a workday.

Fashion dictates a shoulder or messenger bag. Baby I was sporting these things well before they were in.

Familiarity dictates the need for a yakpak bag, preferably this one. My current bag comes from them and I love it to death. Their lifetime warranties and exchange policy also helps season the pot.

Finance dictates the extra $35 dollars for shipping/handling/cross border fees is way too much. *le sigh*

Futility dictates I look locally for a new bag.

They've put the name Longhorn out to pasture

Beta testing for Windows Vista has started; it is Microsoft's latest version of their Windows operating system.

According to PC World article they're promising big things:

Microsoft's design goals for Windows Vista fell into three major categories: instilling a "new level of confidence in your PC" by improving security, privacy, performance, reliability, and ease of deployment; bringing clarity to the organization and use of information; and "seamlessly connecting you to people and devices."

Of the three, improving user confidence was at the top of the list at the pre-beta workshop. "We have to nail the fundamentals first," says Windows client director Austin Wilson. Microsoft is determined to avoid "the patch management nightmare" and to seal off vulnerabilities "so that things like Blaster don't happen in the future," he adds.

Now if they could just get rid of the paperclip in their next version of Office ...

Tease the cat with these big pieces of fish!

Emma pointed me to Pixelgirlshop for their iPod accessories. I'm loving the website for their Sushi Pillows!

Imagine getting a big wooden boat for your coffee table and having these babies sitting ontop of it. Awesome!

iBroadcast

What I want:

An attachment to my iPod that will broadcast my music via Bluetooth. This will let me use a set of wireless Bluetooth compatible headphones for that extra uber-tech effect.

On top of that, this broadcasting device will allow anyone else with a set of Bluetooth headphones to listen to my music. Complete strangers could just set their headphones on roam, picking up other broadcasters at random, listening in onto what they listen to.

Of course if you didn't want to broadcast to complete strangers, you could turn that feature off. You could also set it up so that you'd have to approve every person trying to connect to your broadcast.

If not Bluetooth, then some other form of short range wireless communication. It shouldn't be too hard.

What do you think?

That is fine African Padauk my friend

It's rare to find a girl who has a deep appreciation for iPods and wood grain texture. If such a girl exists I know she'd simply die over the Real Wood iPod Mod by ZapWizard.

Actualy this baby looks so good I think anyone would appreciate it.

The better to see you with my dear.

I have not made a major computer component purcahse in over a year! That has got to be a record for me. Of course I have to remedy that situation by drooling over widescreen LCD displays like these babies. How do you like them apples?

However the LCD screen in the 20" is the same one that Dell sells. If I can hold out for one of the crazy sales they have I may be able to get one for a relatively reasonable price.

1680x1050 Pixels ... *drool*

A messenger bag to you Rudy

I have been happily toating around a Yak Pak messenger bag for several years now. Although the one I have right now has a lifetime warranty, it still doesn't stop me from peeking at their website from time to time. The Railroad looks very nice.

But one of the best deals on that site is their 3 Random Bags for $10 offer. For a thousand pennies you get 3 random bags from their discontinued/prototype stock. I've taken advantage of that deal twice and was happily suprised on both occasions.

Bad Table!

Visit Straight Line Designs for all your whimiscal furniture needs. It looks like they're strictly a custom design place and none of pieces there are available for mass market. That's a shame as I could see myself making good use of those Knick Knack shelving units.
