2008 In Review - Best Video Game

This was an easy choice. Of the games I played last year there was only one game that had me entertained for four months and had me clocking in over 400 hours of game time.

The World Ends With You by Square Enix for the Nintendo DS is my Best Video Game for 2008. I’ve already written about the game in this blog, twice no less, so I won’t bother rehashing my praise for it again.

Just do yourself a favour and pick up a copy if you can. Once you get over the learning curve of the game you’ll end up loving the game for all of its depth and re-playability.

The World Has Ended With Me

After nearly 400 hours of game time I think I have finally had my fill of The World Ends With You. Up until the end of October it has been my constant companion during my commute. I have finished the game and completed nearly all of the end game content. All that’s left is to collect those last few pins but the allure of that goal has finally faded. All in all it was an excellent game and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fresh new spin on the Japanese RPG formula.

Nintendo DSi

Yesterday Nintendo announced that a new version of the Nintendo DS is on the way. Kotaku liveblogged the press conference for you, but here is a summary of the new features of the Nintendo DSi:

  • The screens are larger, at 3.25 inches diagonal (a 17% increase from the DS Lite)
  • Two 0.3 megapixel cameras. One on the hinge facing you and one on the back of the top panel.
  • “Audio Enhancements” which include pitch and playback controls (but I’m also guessing iPod like functionality as well)
  • An SD memory slot for music/picture storage
  • Built in web browser!
  • A new DSi Shop, similar to the Wii Store/Wii Ware Shop where you can download games for a set amount of points (Wii points or new DSi points? Not sure.)
  • Removal of the Game Boy Advanced cartridge slot
  • Initial release colours are White (Pearl?) and Black (Onyx!)
  • Will be available November 1st in Japan at around $180 USD.

While I’m a little sad we’ve lost the GBA slot, it won’t affect me that much since I rarely use it anyway. I hope this comes out in North America as well because I would be more than happy to pick one up. Gimmie!

Update: Offical Pictures and videos for me you to drool over

Trobies and Miahas

Can’t blog. Playing Spore. You should too!

I need more people to add to my friends’s list … which is currently empty. Le sigh.

Garlic flying everwhere!

Here is a great preview of Wario Land: Shake it!, a new game for the Nintendo Wii. Normally I would post the video here on the blerg but …

… well see for yourself.

The World Ends With You

This video gives you a little glimpse at what my daily commutes to work have been like for the past month and a half.

That is game play footage from The World Ends With You for the Nintendo DS.

I love this game.

Everything about it is smart and enjoyable; from the story and the setting to the unique game play mechanics that are tailored to the capabilities of the DS. Probably my favourite element is the crazy battle system which is a huge departure from the typical Japanese RPG formula.

In my line of work we call them undocumented features

In the video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, a bug was discovered that allowed the player to take a shot off the water. It was documented in this video.

The publishers of the game, EA Sports fired back with the following video response:

Just another example of how some games are becoming more and more realistic.

Quake On Me

Kotaku points out a mod for Quake that changes the art to make it look like Ah-Ha’s “Take On Me” video. Pretty neat, although he left the player’s gun and the enemies as origami like paper dolls. I would have liked to have seen them recreated as penciled in sketch art as well.

It may not be thirty lives, but it still is pretty neat

If you use Google Reader to aggregate your RSS feeds, there is a nifty gaming related easter egg hidden inside the web application.

Any time you are in your Google Reader try typing in the Konami Code using your keyboard and see what happens.

It’s no better to be safe than sorry

I love this video because you can really see that netcasty really, really enjoys playing SingStar. The dude is putting his whole heart into it and loving every minute of it.

I think that’s the best way approach any karaoke situation. I may not have the best singing voice, but I will be damed sure to have the best time while I have the microphone in my hand!

Be sure to check out his other SingStar sessions on his YouTube profile. All of them are great fun and sort of make me want to look into getting the game myself.
