Fly me off the Handel

This performance of the theme from Shaft by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is great but my favourite number from them is Fly me off the Handel.

This video was the first time I had ever seen the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain in action and I thought they were fantastic. Ukuleles aside, it is amazing how all those songs are rooted in the same melody and how they can be harmonized so easily.

I meant to post about them the first time I ran across the above clip but I never got around to it. Well this makes up for the gross oversight!

I’ll Eat You Up!

Ever since Ernie posted about it, I’ve had “Eat You Up” by BoA in my head. Correction: I’ve had the chorus from this clip stuck in my head. The verse is kind of jagged, but no more than any other dance/pop song out there.

But the chorus? Yeah, that chorus is smooth.

Two strings is enough to invoke a lot of emotion

Here is another slightly useless fact about me: Whenever I encounter a busker playing an erhu, I always drop them a few coins. The musician doesn’t even have to be particularly good, they just need to playing it while I am passing buy.

Although the guy in this video? He’s really good.

There is just something about the sound of the Chinese violin that seems to connect with me. I find it has a voice that flows and that aches with emotion in each of its wavering notes; very different from the sharp and rigid sound I associate with the European violin.

I thought about buying an erhu for myself but thought better of it. When would I ever find the time to practice? I barely make the effort pick up my guitar and bang out a few chords to “Wonderwall”. Trying to learn another instrument would just result in another fancy knick knack to keep on the shelf.

Better to leave the erhu playing to the professionals and to the wonderful buskers on my commute. I am more than happy to exchange my spare change for a few moments of tuneful enjoyment.

Jump on it! Jump on it! Jump on it!

Thanks to The Fresh Prince of Bel-air we are familiar with the Sugarhill Gang’s rendition of “Apache“. When Will and Carlton were stuck in Las Vegas they perform a very memorable dance number to that song. I am not ashamed to admit that I have broke out these dance moves from time to time myself.

L hates it when I listen to that song because it gets stuck in her head for days. Last Sunday I was feeling a little mischievous and tried searching for the above video on YouTube. I was surprised when I discovered another video that shows the original version of “Apache” by the Shadows.

Shad: The Old Prince Still Lives at Home

L pointed out this Torontoist article about Shad and his reenactment of the opening credits for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air . Being a fan of the show this music video really tugs on all the right strings, making it an instant favourite for me.

As an added bonus, I am completely digging Shad’s other stuff on his MySpace Page. Great for listening to while you’re toiling away at your desk at work.

Hip-Hop Machinima

A list of ten Hip-Hop videos recreated in The Sims. It is amazing how close they can get to the actual videos given the relatively limitations behind The Sims game engine.

Although I am impressed that I actually know 6 out of the 10 songs listed. Looks like I’m not completely out of the music loop after all.

Weird Al Yankovic Polkarama!

I just ran across this medley of Polka covers from Weird Al and I am loving it!

I am tempted to take his cover of Candy Shop and turn it into a ring tone just for fun.

What’s Opera Doc?

A list of Ten Operas You Didn’t Know You Already Like from Neatorama. The first few opera pieces on the post provided a great soundtrack for my morning today. I plan on closing this evening by finishing up the rest of the videos.
